Rose & Thorn: DC One Shot - Tom Taylor / Neil Googe
DC’s throwback to Rose & Thorn was… ok. The art was interesting - Googe draws Rose with wildly dramatic facial expressions that gave me a bit of a tickle. But then there are some moments where I was just sort of confused?
Rose (Left) is wearing the same school uniform she wore the night before as Thorn (Right) - so how did it magically get cut in half that night and then restore back to full length the next day? It’s just another stereotypical depiction of the bad girl as oversexualized even when the context makes no real sense. Magically at the end of the issue, when Rose decides to let Thorn have her control, Rose’s skirt magically seems to appear shorter in the next few panels too. Really? What kind of symbolism is this? Not buying it.
It also doesn’t really read like a one-shot. It seems like maybe DC is doing this to see what other old secondary & C-list characters to reboot? Anyways, the writing kept me reading, and I feel like Taylor did a better job integrating signs of modernity than other writers do. The scenes of Facebook, iPhones, etc didn’t seem nearly as forced and silly as other tries I have seen lately. If DC really is considering rebooting Rose & Thorn, I don’t think I would mind Tom Taylor staying on, but I would probably cross my fingers for a different artist. Then again, what DC artist isn’t drawing bull shit like that?
my two cents.
